Hummingbirds are some of my favorite birds. I love hearing the low thrum of their wings, and how they hover in mid-air. For this painting I was inspired by the bright red of the throat and the metallic glow of the green feathers.
Once in high school, I was drawing a hummingbird after completing an assignment. My teacher walked by my desk and saw my piece. He stopped and stared quietly, then he asked if I would ever consider selling the drawing; his daughter loved hummingbirds. I was stunned he liked my art enough to inquire about purchasing it. It opened my mind to new possibilities, and I’m incredibly grateful for this encouragement. My teacher’s name was Mr. Helmsing; this piece celebrates that encouragement as well as exploring the relationship between colors, and the wonder of hummingbirds.
